Through two emblematic projects, the Municipality of Meteora is attempting to reintroduce the area to the modern visitor and to dynamically integrate it into the country’s tourist map.
In the unknown “Little Meteora“, where nature continues to keep its authenticity unchanged and the landscape maintains its silent power almost untouched, the Municipality of Meteora is attempting a deep cut in the development map of the area.
Trails and climbing routes
The new network of certified and signposted trails with a total length of 17.5 kilometers, as well as the Via Ferrata climbing route in Gavros, constitute the two main pillars of this new identity that is being built gradually but steadily.
With a comprehensive strategic plan, the Municipal Authority of Lefteris Avramopoulos is transforming a previously “invisible” place into an emerging core of alternative tourism and nature experiences.
The two projects have already been completed and delivered by the Municipality of Meteora, and are expected to be officially inaugurated in the summer, marking the institutional beginning of a new tourism era for the region. At the same time, they were implemented with a total funding of 429,967 euros from the CLLD/LEADER program, constituting critical investments in the formation of a modern, sustainable and experiential tourism product.
An emerging core of alternative tourism and nature experiences
As the mayor of Meteora emphasizes, these are interventions that go beyond the character of simple infrastructure projects and constitute strategic choices with a profound developmental footprint. “Strategic planning is changing the data in the Municipality of Meteora and the Municipal Unit of Chasia, creating a tourism product that strengthens our overall planning and serves the goal of living villages,” he notes characteristically.
In an area that until recently remained off the tourist radar, the unknown “Little Meteora” is now becoming a reference point for alternative tourism, signaling a new development narrative for Chasia and the Municipality of Meteora as a whole.

The project includes the following routes:

- Gaitanasa Bypass (0.3 km)

In parallel, the construction works and upgrade, such as vegetation clearance, construction of wooden stairs, wooden bridge, signage and information signs, tables and chairs, kiosks, waste bins, first aid kits, stone fountains and outdoor recreation infrastructure.
For safe passage, specialized equipment is required, such as a climbing harness (boadri), helmet, fall arrest kit (EAS), rope, safety carabiner, appropriate footwear and leather gloves
VIA FERRATA Chassia
Via Ferrata is a technical climbing and touring project that brings the activity of mountaineering closer to the general public.
It was built in accordance with the specifications of EN 16869/2017 and the DSADP-VF Directive of the Hellenic Mountaineering and Hiking Association. It has a length of approximately 1,100 meters of wire rope, while its total deployment exceeds 3 kilometers. It consists of 6 sectors (A’, B’, C’, D’, E’ and St’) and its crossing takes approximately 3 to 5 hours, depending on the experience of the groups.
The route can be done either in its entirety or in sections, while its general degree of difficulty is 2/3 (D) on the Italian scale, with individual variations per sector.
For safe passage, specialized equipment is required, such as a climbing harness (boadrier), helmet, fall arrest kit (EAS), rope, safety carabiner, suitable footwear and leather gloves.
“The strategic planning that we are implementing in the Municipality of Meteora is fundamentally changing the data in the Chasia area and in the municipality as a whole, bringing the area forward and creating real development prospects for the future,” Meteora Mayor Lefteris Avramopoulos emphasized to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency.
As he emphasized, through the implementation and completion of two emblematic alternative tourism projects – the network of certified and signposted trails with a total length of 17.5 kilometers and the Via Ferrata in Gavros – the area is acquiring an organized tourist identity for the first time and is dynamically entering the map of experience destinations.
“These are projects that are not just infrastructure, but development tools. Projects that upgrade the overall tourism product, create new opportunities for the local economy and strengthen the extroversion of the area,” he noted.
At the same time, the mayor stressed that these projects have already begun to yield tangible results, as a significant increase in visitor numbers is being recorded in villages that until recently had no tourist activity.
“For the first time, villages such as Gavros and Agios Dimitrios are gaining steady tourist traffic, with 100 to 200 visitors every weekend over the past year, when in the past there was virtually no visitor traffic. This in itself shows the momentum that is being created and confirms that these projects are changing the course of the region,” he said.
In closing, Mr. Avramopoulos underlined that this effort is only the beginning of a broader plan: “We continue with a plan, consistency and faith in the potential of our place, so that Chasia can become a strong and recognizable alternative tourism destination, with lively villages, an active economy and real development prospects.”
