The Municipality of Veria has opened a network of 20 hiking trails covering 60 kilometers across Mount Vermio and the Pieria Mountains, strengthening its year-round nature tourism offering and expanding opportunities for outdoor recreation.
The network is based on existing trails that have been cleared, improved and signposted, Mayor Konstantinos Vorgiazidis told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA). Detailed maps and route information will be available on the municipality’s website from the beginning of next month, helping visitors plan their hikes.
In addition to hiking trails, the network includes selected mountain biking routes, offering visitors more ways to explore the area’s mountainous landscape throughout the year.
Year-round destination
According to the mayor, particular focus has been placed on Seli, one of northern Greece’s best-known mountain destinations, which attracts visitors in both summer and winter. Situated at an altitude of around 1,500 meters, the village is home to Greece’s oldest ski resort and serves as a gateway to the surrounding trail network.
The project is designed to showcase the region’s natural landscapes while connecting visitors with traditional villages, local history, gastronomy and regional products, supporting the municipality’s broader strategy to diversify its tourism offering beyond the peak season.
Funded through Greece’s “Greece 2.0” National Recovery and Resilience Plan with European Union support, the initiative aims to strengthen nature-based and alternative tourism while promoting sustainable visitor experiences across the municipality.
