How is it applied?
Tinos Eco Lodge was established in 2013 as a family-run venture born out of the need for a more meaningful and sustainable approach to tourism development. Its owners sought to make the most of the land and local traditions of Tinos and the Cyclades, creating a hospitality venue that goes beyond mere accommodation to offer a complete experience of life close to nature. Its philosophy is based on self-sufficiency, environmental awareness and respect for the natural and cultural environment – elements that make it a model example of agrotourism accommodation.
The accommodation is situated in the hinterland of Tinos, in a quiet and relatively secluded area, away from the busy tourist centres. The natural landscape is characterised by traditional terraces planted with olive, lemon and other fruit trees, as well as small stables; it is also one of the few forested areas on Tinos, featuring oak and plane trees, which are quite rare in the Cyclades.
Tinos Eco Lodge comprises three traditional buildings, designed in keeping with local architectural traditions using Tinian stone and natural materials, whilst incorporating modern facilities to meet the needs of visitors. The communal areas are designed to enhance guests’ connection with nature, offering comfort without altering the character of the landscape.
The services at Tinos Eco Lodge focus on quality and authenticity. Guests have access to relaxation areas, outdoor facilities and the opportunity to take part in activities related to nature and agricultural production. Particular importance is placed on nutrition, as the lodge offers produce from its own organic vegetable garden or local produce sourced from producers on the island. The accommodation also offers the option of ordering a basket of vegetables (veggie box) from its garden, subject to prior arrangement, for delivery to the centre of Tinos.
In general, the hospitality at Tinos Eco Lodge is personalised, with the aim of fostering a more personal and meaningful connection between guests and the place.
An important part of the accommodation experience is the range of activities on offer, which enhance the experiential nature of its services. For example, visitors can take part in:
- agricultural work, such as tending the vegetable garden, harvesting produce and learning about local crops,
- activities such as hiking along trails, exploring nature, collecting herbs, etc.
- experiences related to gastronomy, such as preparing local dishes, giving visitors the opportunity to discover the local cuisine through hands-on participation,

- Construction of a building made entirely of Tinian stone, by traditional craftsmen from the island.
- Maintenance of traditional dry-stone structures (traditional stone structures used for soil retention, enabling cultivation on sloping land).
- The use of renewable energy sources, primarily solar (photovoltaic systems) and wind (wind turbines), to create an energy-self-sufficient accommodation, thereby reducing dependence on conventional forms of energy.
- Water management through rainwater harvesting and wastewater treatment (using a special filtration unit in reed beds), for reuse in irrigation.
- Waste management, with a focus on recycling and composting, whilst encouraging visitors to reduce their plastic consumption and adopt more environmentally friendly practices.
- Construction and use of composting toilets, solar herb dryers and the use of eco-friendly materials in construction.
- Running an organic garden and greenhouse using natural fertilisers and applying the principles of regenerative agriculture.
- Use of eco-friendly products (e.g. eco-friendly soaps).
At the same time, the accommodation demonstrates a strong sense of social responsibility and seeks to actively support the local community and economy. By way of example, the following initiatives are mentioned:
- Collaboration with local producers and suppliers, promoting the region’s products and services.
- Contribution to the preservation of cultural heritage, encouraging visitors to experience the customs, traditions and history of Tinos.
- Organisation of certified permaculture design seminars that promote sustainable living and an ecological philosophy.
- Hosting volunteers from all over the world, offering training in agritourism, permaculture and self-sufficient living.
Of all the above, Tinos Eco Lodge is a good example of agrotourism accommodation, as it combines sustainability with authenticity and experience. Tinos Eco Lodge is primarily aimed at travellers seeking authentic and sustainable accommodation experiences, away from the mass tourism of Tinos, who are environmentally conscious and wish to connect with nature and experience rural life.

Tinos Eco Lodge was established in 2013.
Results
After completing its first full tourist season in 2017, Tinos Eco Lodge published its first aggregated consumption and performance data (Eco Statistics). The findings showed that the lodge operated successfully, confirming in practice that the sustainable design practices it implements yield substantial results. Specifically, the lodge achieved full water self-sufficiency even during the dry summer months, whilst the photovoltaic system adequately met its operational energy needs. At the same time, a significant improvement in soil quality was recorded, making it suitable for cultivation. Overall, the evaluation demonstrates that its operating model is efficient, sustainable and practicable.
In this context, Tinos Eco Lodge became a partner and one of the six pilot sites of the HYDROUSA research project under Horizon 2020, which focuses on the development of innovative water resources management solutions in water-scarce areas. Furthermore, it has been selected for funding under the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF), as part of the “Regional Operational Programme for the Support of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises”.
