Why is it good practice?

Tinos Eco Lodge is a good example of agritourism accommodation, as it combines hospitality with direct contact between visitors and rural life and local production. It has an organic vegetable garden and offers experiences of participating in agricultural activities, enhancing the experiential nature of the stay. At the same time, it operates with ecological practices, utilizing renewable energy sources and implementing natural resource management with respect to the environment. Its construction is based on local materials and traditional architecture, preserving the cultural identity of Tinos. In addition, it promotes the consumption of local products and the connection with the local community. Thus, it offers an authentic and sustainable experience that fully meets the principles of agritourism.

How is it applied?

Tinos Eco Lodge was created in 2013 as a family initiative born from the need for a more substantial and sustainable way of tourism development. Its owners sought to utilize the land and local tradition of Tinos and the Cyclades, creating a hospitality space that is not limited to simple accommodation, but offers a complete experience of life close to nature. Its philosophy is based on self-sufficiency, ecological awareness and respect for the natural and cultural environment, elements that make it a model example of agrotourism accommodation.

The accommodation is located in the hinterland of Tinos, in a quiet and relatively isolated area, away from the busy tourist centers. The natural landscape is characterized by traditional terraces with olive, lemon and other fruit trees, small stables, while it is one of the few forest areas of Tinos with oak and plane trees, quite rare for the Cyclades.

Tinos Eco Lodge consists of three traditional buildings, with the architecture of the buildings following the local tradition, using Tinian stone and natural materials, while incorporating modern amenities to meet the needs of visitors. The common areas are designed in a way to enhance contact with nature, offering comfort without altering the character of the landscape.

The services of Tinos Eco Lodge are oriented towards quality and authenticity. Guests have access to relaxation areas, outdoor facilities and the opportunity to participate in activities related to nature and agricultural production. Particular importance is given to nutrition, as products from the organic vegetable garden of the accommodation are offered, or local products from producers on the island. The accommodation also offers the possibility of ordering a basket of vegetables (veggie box) from its garden, upon agreement and for shipments to the center of Tinos.

In general, the hospitality at Tinos Eco Lodge is personalized, aiming to create a more human and meaningful relationship between guests and the place.

An important part of the experience of the accommodation is the activities offered, which enhance the experiential nature of its services. For example, visitors can participate in:

  • agricultural work, such as tending the vegetable garden, harvesting produce and learning about the local crops,
  • activities such as hiking on trails, exploring nature, collecting herbs, etc.
  • experiences related to gastronomy, such as preparing local dishes, giving visitors the opportunity to get to know the local cuisine through practical participation,
  • wellness activities such as yoga retreats, meditation sessions, nature therapies, etc.,
  • local traditions (e.g. participation in the Easter Sunday meal).

In addition to the above, the ecological practices implemented at Tinos Eco Lodge are also particularly important, as they constitute a key pillar of its operation. For example, the following are mentioned:

  • Construction of a building entirely from Tinian stone, by traditional craftsmen of the island.
  • Maintenance of traditional dry-stone structures (traditional stone structures for soil retention, allowing cultivation on sloping lands).
  • Use of renewable energy sources, mainly solar (photovoltaic system) and wind (wind turbine) to create an energy-autonomous accommodation, reducing dependence on conventional forms of energy.
  • Water management through rainwater collection and wastewater treatment (through a special filtration unit in reed beds), for its reuse in irrigation.
  • Garbage management, with an emphasis on recycling and composting, while encouraging the reduction of plastic consumption and the adoption of more environmentally friendly practices by visitors.
  • Construction and use of composting toilets, solar herb dryers and use of ecological materials in construction.
  • Operation of an organic garden and greenhouse using natural fertilizers and applying principles of regenerative agriculture.
  • Use of ecological products (e.g. ecological soaps).

At the same time, the accommodation demonstrates strong social responsibility and seeks to actively support the local community and economy. Indicatively, the following actions are mentioned:

  • Collaboration with local producers and suppliers, promoting the products and services of the region.
  • Contribution to the preservation of cultural heritage, encouraging visitors to come into contact with the customs, traditions and history of Tinos.
  • Organization of certified permaculture design seminars that promote sustainable living and ecological philosophy.
  • Hosting volunteers from all over the world, offering training in agrotourism, permaculture and autonomous living.

Of all the above, Tinos Eco Lodge is a good example of agrotourism accommodation, as it combines sustainability with authenticity and experience. It does not just offer accommodation, but a deeper connection with nature, rural life and local culture, responding to modern needs for responsible and quality tourism.

Where is it applied?

Tinos Eco Lodge is mainly aimed at travelers seeking authentic and sustainable accommodation experiences, away from the mass tourism of Tinos, with an ecological conscience who want to get in touch with nature, experience rural life and explore rural life.

When did it applied?

Tinos Eco Lodge was created in 2013.

Results

After completing its first full tourist season in 2017, Tinos Eco Lodge published its first aggregated consumption and performance data (Eco Statistics). The findings showed that the lodge operated successfully, confirming in practice that the sustainable design practices it implements bring substantial results. Specifically, full water self-sufficiency was achieved even during the dry summer months, while the photovoltaic system adequately covered the energy needs of its operation. At the same time, a significant improvement in soil quality was recorded, making it suitable for cultivation. Overall, the evaluation proves that its operating model is efficient, sustainable and applicable in practice.

In this context, Tinos Eco Lodge became a partner and one of the six pilot sites of the HYDROUSA research project under Horizon 2020, which focuses on the development of innovative water resources management solutions in water-scarce areas. Furthermore, it has been selected for funding through the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF), under the “Regional Operational Programme for the Support of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises”.
