The Municipality of Kantanos–Selinos of the prefecture (Regional Unit) of Chania, took part in the Paris Randos Nature 2026, the international exhibition which took place from 30 January to 1 February at the Parc Floral de Paris and is a a leading event dedicated to hiking, trails and sustainable outdoor tourism.
Hiking in France has been confirmed as the main leisure and sporting activity for the general public.
According to a recent study, 62% of French people have gone hiking or taken a leisurely walk at least once in the past year, i.e. approximately 30 million people, with a significant increase across all age groups and particularly among those aged 18–34.
At the same time, the growing popularity of digital route-planning apps is boosting activity, with 47% of walkers now using apps on their smartphones.
Paris Randos Nature brought together organisations, specialist event organisers, destinations, travel agents and hiking clubs, showcasing both traditional routes and modern trends in outdoor tourism.
The participation of the Municipality of Kantanos–Selinos formed part of the wider context of the Region of Crete, which showcased the Chania Trails, whilst the pavilion was situated in the ‘Paths of Greece’ area.
The Municipality of Kantanos–Selinos was the only municipality to have a physical presence at the event, showcasing the region’s trails, the distinctive features of its natural and cultural landscape, and the overall range of outdoor experiences that bring together nature, culture and local identity.
The development of organised hiking experiences contributes significantly to extending the tourist season in Greece beyond the traditional summer peak.
The timely and consistent participation of the Municipality of Kantanos – Selinos in the international exhibitions ‘Paris Randos Nature’ in Paris and ‘Salon du Randonneur’ in Lyon forms part of a consistent strategy to promote the region’s trails and outdoor experiences, based on the view that the development of organised hiking experiences contributes significantly to extending the tourist season beyond the traditional summer peak.
The Municipality of Kantanos – Selinos was represented by Deputy Mayor Stelios Kalogridis, who, on the fringes of the exhibition, held meetings with tour operators who already organise hiking excursions along the European E4 trail; during these meetings, keen interest was expressed in expanding their activities to include the new trails in the Municipality of Kantanos – Selinos.
At the same time, in collaboration with Dimitris Michelogiannis, an exclusive feature on the region’s trails was published in the international magazine *Trek Magazine*.
