Why is it good practice?

The “Slovenia Green Wellness Route” is regarded as a fine example of sustainable tourism management, as it offers visitors a unique alternative experience that contributes to environmental protection whilst also supporting the development of local communities. Specifically, it was designed in accordance with the principles of “slow” and responsible tourism, promoting low-impact modes of transport (cycling) and stays in certified eco-friendly accommodation, thereby ensuring high standards of sustainability. At the same time, it bolsters the local economy by offering authentic experiences and activities such as thermal baths, local cuisine and traditional pastimes. The route serves as a model for how a national sustainability strategy can be practically applied to tourist routes and sets an example for other European countries seeking to develop tourism in an environmentally and socially responsible manner.

How is it applied?

The Slovenia Green Wellness Route was designed as a strategic initiative to promote sustainable tourism in Slovenia, combining cycling with wellness and local cultural heritage. The route was developed as part of the “Slovenia Green – Sustainable Tourism Scheme” project, a national programme aimed at promoting and certifying sustainable tourism in Slovenia. The project is supported by the Slovenian Tourist Board and aims to develop themed routes and destinations that meet strict criteria for environmental, social and economic sustainability. Specifically, the routes exclusively link destinations that have been awarded the Slovenia Green certificate, are committed to a green future and are developing their tourism in a sustainable manner.

In this context, the Slovenian Tourist Board, in collaboration with the Slovenian Thermal Baths Association, the Slovenia Green Organisation, the participating destinations and GoodPlace, a company specialising in sustainable tourism, has designed a circular cycle route that will link thermal spas and destinations holding Slovenia Green certification, offering travellers an experience that combines physical activity, wellness and the exploration of local culture.

The official launch of the route took place on 22 June 2022, to mark World Bathing Day. The route covers 680 kilometres, averaging around 40 kilometres of moderate cycling per day on a mix of surfaces, with more than two-thirds of the route being tarmac, and includes stops at suggested destinations. Specifically, the route begins in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, then heads north to Kamnik, then east to Maribor and on to the country’s Pannonian Region before heading south across the Drava and Sava rivers. The route takes around 16 days to complete and ends in Ljubljana. Cyclists can choose to cycle the entire route or sections of it, whilst making use of the country’s convenient rail network. The recommended time to visit is from April to October.

The official Slovenia Green website provides all the necessary information about the route. Specifically, it offers a detailed description of the destinations along the route, the points of interest and the activities available to visitors. This information is shown on a map, alongside suggestions for accommodation and restaurants. It is also worth noting that the map highlights areas where cyclists may encounter obstacles or hazards along the route (e.g. roadworks, dangerous junctions, roads with heavy traffic, etc.). This information is accompanied by relevant photographs and video footage, and is also available via a mobile app.

It is also worth noting that:

  • The route makes use of existing cycling infrastructure, such as cycle paths and quiet country roads, offering a safe and enjoyable cycling experience.
  • Accommodation along the route often offers special facilities for cyclists, such as secure bike storage and maintenance tools.
  • The route is designed to be accessible via the Slovenian national railway network, enabling cyclists to travel easily between the stations along the route. Based on the above, the reasons why the route is considered a good practice in the development and management of sustainable tourism are, indicatively, as follows:

Promoting alternative and slow tourism

The route is designed for cycle tourism and leisurely exploration, avoiding mass tourism and encouraging a connection with the landscape. Specifically, it links 16 “green” destinations and health centres/spas via quiet routes.

Promoting wellbeing, health and a connection with nature

Visitors have access to natural hot springs, spas and thermal baths, as well as activities such as yoga in the countryside, detox programmes and walking routes. In this way, the tourist experience is combined with wellness, enhancing the traveller’s physical and mental well-being.

Promoting sustainable tourism through certification

The route only includes destinations and businesses that hold the Slovenia Green certificate, a national sustainability standard that is aligned with international standards (e.g. the Global Sustainable Tourism Council – GSTC). It is also aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, it includes options featuring eco-friendly accommodation, local ecotourism experiences and low-emission transport.

Supporting local communities and local entrepreneurship

The route showcases culinary and experiential attractions, boosting local employment and the economy. Local produce (honey, wine, cheeses), craft activities (pottery, weaving) and traditional agritourism establishments are just some of the options available to visitors.

Supporting the visitor on their journey

The route provides a safe and well-organised environment for cycling, with dedicated infrastructure and services designed to facilitate the planning and execution of visitors’ journeys.
