At the same time, good organization, clear signage and the provision of information help hikers to move safely, without burdening the environment. The role of the local community is also particularly important, as the trail supports small businesses and strengthens the economy of the areas through which it passes. Through this balance between nature protection, quality experience and local development, the Rota Vicentina is a successful European example of integrated trail management.
How is it applied?
Rota Vicentina is a network of trails located in the southwestern tip of Portugal, crossing the regions of Alentejo and Algarve. It is a coastal and semi-mountainous area of exceptional natural beauty, much of which is protected by the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. The landscape alternates between impressive Atlantic cliffs, extensive sand dunes, traditional villages, agricultural land and Mediterranean forests, creating a unique natural environment that attracts hikers and visitors seeking an authentic experience in nature every year.
Rota Vicentina was established as a trail network in 2012 through a collaboration between public and private stakeholders with the aim of promoting sustainable ecotourism in a region that had previously remained relatively unknown on the international hiking map. In 2013, the non-profit organization Association Rota Vicentina was founded to ensure the effective management and development of the network. The Association was created to represent the local community and today has more than 200 members, forming a diverse network that includes local businesses (guesthouses, restaurants, transport companies, bicycle rental companies and local mountain guides), public authorities (municipalities and regional tourism organizations), environmental organizations, international tour operators promoting responsible travel, as well as individual members and friends of the trail. Within just a few years, the initiative experienced significant growth. The network expanded by incorporating new routes, specialized mountain biking networks and circular trails, and today extends over a total of 750 kilometres.
Today, the trail network is divided into four main categories, catering to different levels of experience and interests:
- Historical Way: A long-distance route crossing the inland countryside through agricultural landscapes, forests, rivers and historic villages. It is suitable for both hiking and mountain biking.
- Fishermen’s Trail: Follows the traditional paths once used by local fishermen along the coastline. It is a more demanding route across sand and rocky terrain, offering spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean.
- Circular Routes: Shorter routes that start and end at the same location, making them ideal for day trips.
- Mountain Bike & Gravel Tracks: Specially designed and mapped routes for mountain bikers.
Although hiking is the main activity offered by Rota Vicentina, visitors can also enjoy a wide variety of experiences that enrich their visit:
- Cycling and bikepacking on specially designed inland routes.
- Water sports, including surfing, fishing, diving, canoeing and kayaking in river estuaries.
- Nature observation, including birdwatching and the observation of dolphins and whales.
- Cultural and gastronomic experiences, such as local cooking classes, wine tastings, visits to traditional craft workshops and local markets.
- Wellness activities, including yoga and meditation at coastal locations overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
To support all these activities, a comprehensive range of services is provided. Hikers can make use of luggage transfer services between accommodations, access the official navigation application with detailed digital maps, or hire certified local nature guides who provide valuable information about the area’s flora, fauna and history. Likewise, cyclists have access to bicycle rental services, maintenance stations and specialized support services.
Regarding the management of the trail network, one of its most important pillars is the protection of the natural environment. The strict delimitation of the trails helps reduce sand dune erosion and protects the coastal vegetation, while also minimizing pressure on the area’s sensitive habitats. In addition, the Association promotes the concept of regenerative tourism by encouraging visitors to actively participate in environmental conservation and restoration activities. Volunteering is a key component of this effort and includes:
- Maintenance activities during which participants clean the trails and repair damaged sections.
- Trail “adoption” programmes, where volunteers, schools and local community groups take responsibility for maintaining specific sections of the network.
- Long-term volunteering programmes involving young people from various European countries who contribute daily to the management and maintenance of the trails.
Another important aspect of the management model is its effective approach to controlling overtourism. While many coastal areas of Portugal experience considerable pressure during the summer months, Rota Vicentina has been designed to attract visitors mainly from autumn to spring. In this way, tourism activity is distributed over a longer period of the year, reducing pressure during the peak season. At the same time, the combination of coastal and inland routes helps distribute visitor flows more evenly, directing tourists from the crowded coastline towards the smaller villages of the interior.
Rota Vicentina also makes a significant contribution to the local community. Sustainable tourism generates income that is directed primarily to local businesses and residents. The economic benefits extend to guesthouses, small shops, restaurants, local producers and service providers, thereby strengthening the local economy. At the same time, new employment opportunities are created, encouraging young people to remain in the area and invest in activities related to sustainable tourism. In this way, both traditional economic activities and the cultural and gastronomic heritage of the region are preserved.
In conclusion, Rota Vicentina represents a highly successful example of trail network management, based on cooperation among local stakeholders, the protection of the natural environment and the active participation of the local community. This case demonstrates that a trail can serve as a tool for sustainable tourism development, contributing to the preservation of a region’s natural and cultural heritage while offering visitors an authentic experience of discovering the local landscape and way of life.

Rota Vicentina was officially inaugurated and opened to the public in 2012.
Results
One of the most important results of the management of the Rota Vicentina is the international recognition it has received as a model of sustainable and responsible tourism. The “Historical Way” obtained in 2016 and renewed in 2021 the European certification Leading Quality Trails – Best of Europe from the European Ramblers’ Association, a distinction awarded only to hiking trails that meet high standards of quality, safety, signage and management. Furthermore, in 2024 the Association Rota Vicentina was awarded the Medal of Tourist Merit – Responsible Tourism by the Portuguese state, in recognition of its many years of contribution to the promotion of a tourism model that protects the natural environment, strengthens local communities and effectively addresses the seasonality of tourism. At the same time, the project has become a reference point for the development of similar initiatives in Portugal and other European countries.
