Diving tourism is one of the most dynamic forms of specialised tourism worldwide, combining leisure with exploration of the marine environment and engagement with the natural and cultural heritage of each destination. Crete, with its unique marine landscape and biodiversity, offers significant potential for the further development of this specific tourism product.
In this context, A survey is being carried out using questionnaires by the Heraklion Development Agency, a partner in the project “DEEP CONNECTIONS – ”Diving Centres in Crete and Cyprus” (MIS 6038886), which is being implemented within the framework of the INTERREG VI-A Greece–Cyprus Cooperation Programme 2021–2027 and is co-financed by the European Union and national funds.
The questionnaires are intended for representatives of diving centres in Crete as well as to the the general public, representatives of organisations, tourism professionals, residents and visitors to the island, recognising that the development of a sustainable and competitive tourism product requires the participation and cooperation of all parties involved.
The survey aims to gather opinions, experiences and suggestions regarding the potential, challenges and prospects of diving tourism on the island. Participants are invited to share their views on how Crete can more effectively capitalise on its comparative advantages and strengthen its position as an attractive destination for divers from Greece and abroad.
The research findings will provide a valuable basis for the formulation of policy proposals, interventions and strategic actions which will help to enhance the diving experience and strengthen Crete’s competitiveness in the international tourism market. At the same time, they will support the formulation of a development strategy that takes into account both the needs of the local economy and the protection of the natural and marine environment.
Each participant’s contribution is particularly important. Every opinion and every suggestion are valuable elements in shaping a shared vision that will guide the development of diving tourism in Crete in the coming years.
