
Greece has been named the the world’s most beautiful country for 2026, according to a new report by the World Population Review.
The “The Most Beautiful Countries in the World 2026” The list was compiled using data from international publications and magazines, including Condé Nast Traveler, Ranker, Rough Guides and Travel + Leisure.
Across these rankings, Greece came first in the 2025 US News “Most Scenic Countries” list, second in Ranker’s 2023 ranking, and third in Condé Nast Traveller’s “Most Beautiful Countries” list.
“Greece could probably make this list on the strength of the island of Santorini alone, whose iconic white buildings with bright blue domes are virtually guaranteed to feature in any photographic essay on places with beautiful scenery,” the report states.
Meanwhile, mainland Greece is renowned for iconic landmarks such as the Parthenon, the ancient ruins of Delphi with their dramatic mountain views, and the monasteries of Meteora.
The country’s beaches are equally diverse, with white, black, pink and red sand set against the crystal-blue waters of the Mediterranean, rugged mountains, and striking rock formations.
New Zealand and Italy are among the top-ranked destinations
The list features destinations from around the world, highlighting some of the globe’s most picturesque locations.
New Zealand comes in second place, renowned for its dramatic landscapes and breathtaking scenery, which have made it a favourite filming location for fantasy films. Italy ranks third, renowned for its lush natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, whilst Spain and Switzerland round off Europe’s strong showing in the top five.
Thailand, Australia, Portugal, Japan, Costa Rica, Iceland, Finland, Peru, and Morocco are also ranked amongst the world’s most beautiful countries.
