When we hear the term “adventure tourism”, many imagine extreme activities and demanding sports. In reality, however, the concept of “adventure” in modern tourism is much closer to an authentic travel experience: contact with nature, culture and the people of a place.
This is precisely the philosophy that the Peloponnese is investing in, hosting from May 4 to 13, 2026 AdventureWEEK Peloponnese, an international initiative that brings experiential and outdoor tourism to the fore and aspires to place the region dynamically on the global map of adventure tourism.
From international visibility to strategic cooperation
The organization is implemented in strategic cooperation between the Peloponnese Region and Visit Peloponnese with the Hellenic Tourism Organization and the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA), one of the most important international organizations in the field of adventure and experiential tourism.
The initiative was presented for the first time internationally within the framework of the World Travel Market in London, the largest global tourism exhibition, where the Peloponnese was presented as an emerging experiential destination.
Besides, as ATTA Regional Manager Monica Gratsera had pointed out in her statements to the Athens and Macedonian News Agency, the term “adventure” is often misinterpreted in Europe.
“Most people associate it with activities that require very good physical condition. In reality, however, for most travelers, adventure simply means getting out, getting to know a place and getting in touch with the local culture and people,” she noted.
The role of the Greek National Tourism Organization and the Memorandum of Understanding
In the same vein, the Secretary General of the Hellenic Tourism Organization, Andreas Fiorentinos, clarifies that supporting AdventureWEEK Peloponnese is a conscious strategic choice and not a piecemeal promotional action.
As he points out, the cooperation of the Greek National Tourism Organization with the Peloponnese Region and the Adventure Travel Trade Association is part of the broader plan to diversify and upgrade the Greek tourism product.
The initiative, moreover, is based on the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the three parties, with the aim of strengthening the international tourism identity of the Peloponnese and its emergence as an emerging adventure tourism destination on a global level.
“This is not just an event, but a targeted investment in extroversion, quality and the promotion of new tourist experiences,” he notes, underlining that Greece has all the comparative advantages to be a leader in the field of experiential and outdoor tourism.
He also attaches particular importance to the role of such actions in extending the tourist season, emphasizing that experience tourism can be developed throughout the year.
“The development of alternative forms of tourism is a conscious strategic choice of the country and not a cyclical trend. In this context, actions such as Adventure Week Peloponnese, as well as other initiatives on the same theme supported by the Greek National Tourism Organization, such as the International Marathon, Ironman, Xterra, Oceanman and Pierra Creta, make up a coherent network of actions that redefines our tourist product. Experience and adventure tourism is not limited to the summer months but can be developed practically throughout the year. This means that it creates real conditions for the extension of the tourist season, giving life to destinations and periods that until now did not have the same dynamics”, points out the Secretary General of the Greek National Tourism Organization Andreas Fiorentinos, speaking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency.
“At the same time, the value of these actions for local communities is particularly important. We are not just talking about an increase in traffic, but about a qualitative strengthening of the local economy, with the active participation of small and medium-sized enterprises, tourism professionals and producers. As provided for in the Memorandum, the involvement of local bodies and the creation of synergies are a key pillar of the initiative. Ultimately, such actions contribute to a new, more sustainable tourism model, based on authenticity, connection to place and the creation of long-term value for local communities and the national economy as a whole,” he emphasizes.
An international network and a comprehensive program
ATTA is a leading international organization in the field of adventure tourism, with a presence in more than 100 countries and a global network that exceeds 30,000 professionals in the sector. The organization cooperates institutionally with UN Tourism and actively participates in the formulation of policies, sustainability standards and programs to strengthen destinations.
AdventureWEEK is not just a promotional action, but a comprehensive destination development program. It includes a series of actions spanning a period of approximately six months, such as advisory support to the local market, educational programs and specialized webinars, hosting international buyers and journalists, B2B meetings in the marketplace, production of international content and targeted promotion.
During the event, the Peloponnese will host 18 specialized tour operators from Europe and North America, as well as 12 international journalists and content creators collaborating with major international media such as National Geographic, CNN Travel, Lonely Planet, BBC Travel, Condé Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure.
Peloponnese Trails and the bet on sustainability
At the heart of the experience is the Peloponnese Trails initiative, an extensive network of trails that connect natural landscapes, settlements and cultural landmarks throughout the Peloponnese. The network is a key pillar of the Region’s strategy for sustainable tourism development, promoting a type of tourism that strengthens local communities and supports the extension of the tourist season.
As the Deputy Regional Governor of Tourism of Peloponnese Thanos Michelongonas points out, the initiative is an important opportunity for the region to highlight its comparative advantages.
“The Peloponnese has all the elements that modern travelers are looking for: unique natural landscapes, sea and mountain, historicity, authenticity, local gastronomy and vibrant communities. Through actions such as AdventureWEEK we can highlight these characteristics and strengthen a sustainable form of tourism development, with benefits for local communities and rural areas,” he notes.
With actions that combine experiential experiences, international networking and professional training of the local market, AdventureWEEK Peloponnese aspires to place the region on the world map of leading adventure and outdoor tourism destinations.
