GreenSET MEDSSIM Pilot 2026 – Open Call for SMEs that want to develop sustainable and innovative services for tourism

The GreenSET project invites you to participate in the MEDSSIM Open Call, exclusively for Greek Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) that want to develop sustainable and innovative services for tourism.

Selected SMEs will receive:

  • Free support from experts
  • Mentoring and practical tools
  • European exposure
  • Support for designing new services with sustainability and competitive advantage

The aim of the call is to select 3 SMEs per country for the pilot implementation of the MEDSSIM methodology, developed by the partners of the Interreg MED GreenSET project.

Participation is free of charge for the selected SMEs.

A total of 27 SMEs from the Interreg MED programme area will be selected (3 per partner country).

SMEs do not need to be already active in the tourism sector. Any company that wishes to develop a service with potential for application in tourism can apply.

What is MEDSSIM?

MEDSSIM (MED Sustainable Service Innovation Methodology) is a practical step-by-step methodology that helps SMEs to:

  • Use their resources more efficiently
  • Reduce waste
  • Create circular and sustainable services in tourism
  • Become more environmentally friendly
  • Strengthen their innovation and competitiveness

MEDSSIM main phases:

  1. Internal discovery & ecosystem mapping
  2. Opportunity identification & idea generation
  3. Service development & validation
  4. Sustainable business model design
  5. Implementation & continuous improvement

What support will selected SMEs receive?

Selected SMEs will benefit from:

  1. Sustainability assessment with the MEDSSIM methodology
  2. Personalized guidance and mentoring by experts
  3. Support in developing strategic improvements and business model innovations
  4. Support in creating Service Concept Forms* for green and circular transition
  5. Opportunity to test practical digital, green and operational tools for service improvement and cost reduction
  6. Promotion as a best practice at EU level
  7. Participation in transnational learning activities

The pilot support will last approximately 2 months.

At the end of the pilot, each SME will create a Service Concept Form tailored to its needs, expectations and maturity level, which will be developed and finalized with the support it will receive.

*The Service Concept Form is the SME’s personalized roadmap for business improvement and growth.

Who can apply?

Eligible Greek SMEs:

  • Registered in Greece with headquarters in Crete
  • According to the EU SME definition:
  • <250 employees
  • ≤ €50M turnover or < €43M balance sheet total
  • They do not need to be already active in tourism – they just want to develop a service with tourism application

What is required from SMEs:

  • Participation in workshops, trainings and mentoring sessions
  • Designation of a dedicated contact person
  • Communication of necessary business information for analysis
  • Implementation of the developed services
  • Agreement that their participation and results may be publicly shared in project materials, such as case studies, results, portfolios and lists of best practices
  • Availability for possible participation in the promotion of the project

  1. Motivation and commitment
  2. Capacity & resources to participate
  3. Open attitude towards innovation & collaboration

Score 0–5:

  • 0–1: Closed to new ideas/collaborations
  • 2: Minimal openness
  • 3: Limited openness due to resources/uncertainty
  • 4: Clear willingness to experiment & collaborate
  • 5: High openness, proactive & creative attitude

Below are examples of SMEs that are not active in tourism but wish to develop a service with potential application in tourism:

  • SMEs in the ICT sector that provide digital tools for travelers (apps, self-guided tours, etc.)
  • Manufacturing SMEs that offer sustainable products for visitors (eco travel goods, leisure items, etc.)
  • Creative SMEs that design attractive tourism experiences or are interested in developing new service ideas
