Greek Regional Airports Record Strong September Traffic as Tourism Season Extends

Passenger traffic across Fraport’s 14 regional airports in Greece rose in September, signaling continued strength in the country’s tourism momentum beyond the traditional summer peak.

According to data by Fraport Greece, the airports handled a total of 5.5 million passengers, a 2.8 percent increase compared with the same month last year.

Over the first nine months of 2025, total traffic reached 31.78 million passengers, marking a 2.6 percent year-on-year increase.

International traffic drives growth

International arrivals remained the main growth engine, totaling 4.63 million passengers in September — up 3.1 percent and representing 85 percent of total traffic. Domestic travel rose 1 percent to 839,000 passengers, or 15 percent of the total.

The extended summer season benefited most airports in the network — including Aktio, Chania, Corfu, Kavala, Kefalonia, Thessaloniki, Zakynthos, Kos, Mytilene, Mykonos, Rhodes, Samos, Santorini and Skiathos — supported by increased low-cost carrier activity. Ryanair, in particular, expanded its operations, posting a 9.8 percent rise in passengers (+85,000).

Mixed performance across airports

Among individual destinations, Santorini was the only airport to post a decline, recording 65,000 fewer passengers (-15.2 percent) compared with September 2024. The drop was largely due to a reduced flight schedule by Volotea, which lost about 46,000 passengers (-76.8 percent).

In contrast, traffic from Israel surged 40.1 percent (+39,000 passengers), supported by services from Arkia, EL AL, Israir and Blue Bird, as well as renewed routes operated by AEGEAN and Wizz Air.

Positive outlook for autumn

Fraport Greece reports continued strong demand from key markets such as the United Kingdom, Germany and Israel, suggesting that growth is likely to persist in the coming months.

September’s figures confirm that Greece’s regional airports are sustaining high levels of activity even after the summer peak, reinforcing national efforts to extend the tourism season and strengthen year-round connectivity.
