Greece’s Ano Koufonissi and Kythira Among Europe’s Best Destinations for 2026

The Greek islands of Ano Koufonissi and Kythira have secured spots among Europe’s Best Destinations to Travel in 2026, earning praise for their whitewashed villages and relaxed daily lifestyle, according to the European Best Destinations (EBD) organization.

The annual ranking reflects the votes of travelers from 154 countries, showcasing the most captivating destinations for unforgettable experiences across Europe.

From more than 500 locations, the 20 destinations that received the highest number of votes have been crowned Best European Destinations 2026, securing their place among Europe’s top travel choices for this year.

Ano Koufonissi: One of Europe’s most enchanting island escapes

In the heart of the Cyclades, Ano Koufonissi ranked 13th on the list and was described as “one of Europe’s most enchanting island escapes for 2026.”

Recommended for couples, beach lovers, slow travelers, honeymooners and food enthusiasts, the island — along with its tiny main village, Chora — blends whitewashed alleys, vivid blue doorsblooming bougainvillea and crystal-clear turquoise waters. Visitors can enjoy small cafés and seaside tavernas, browse handmade boutiques, and take boat trips to nearby Kato Koufonissi.

Avlemonas: A hidden gem on Kythira

On Kythira, the seaside village of Avlemonas placed 16th, earning recognition as one of Europe’s most compelling small destinations for 2026.

“It’s Greece at its most authentic and deeply soothing,” the editors noted. Avlemonas stands out for its whitewashed houses overlooking natural bays and beaches such as Kaladi and Melidoni, creating a striking coastal landscape.

Gastronomy is also a defining element of the experience, with local delicacies including fresh fish, zucchini flowers, regional cheeses, honey, citrus fruits and simple island dishes served on shaded terraces.

Elsewhere in the ranking, Madrid topped the list, confirming its rise as one of Europe’s most dynamic capitals, celebrated for its culture, lifestyle, gastronomy and quality of life. Nicosia followed in second place, recognized for its Mediterranean character and rich history, while Verona, Paris, Alaçati, Burano, Lisbon, Begur and Cefalu also featured among the top destinations.
