Greece secured a place on Lonely Planet’s 2026 list of top summer getaways, reaffirming its reputation as one of the world’s favourite holiday destinations.
Ranked fourth, Greece stood out for its diverse range of destinations, combining coastal scenery with mountain villages beyond famous islands such as Santorini and Crete.
“From the countryside to mountain villages, there is a wealth of history, culture, and coastline ”to discover,” said the editor. The report highlighted Greece’s picture-perfect islands, a rich collection of ancient sites, and a cuisine renowned for its fresh Mediterranean flavours.
Based on recommendations from locals, travellers are encouraged to explore Serifos in the heart of the Cyclades, the southern coast of Rethymno in Crete, and the laid-back haven of Koufonisia.
Top experiences include exploring ancient Athens, visiting the Sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi, climbing the stone spires of Meteora, enjoying Greece’s café culture, discovering Thessaloniki’s history and culture, exploring the car-free island of Hydra on foot, visiting the villages of Zagorochoria, and seeing where the first Olympic Games took place.

Lonely Planet’s top summer destinations include picture-perfect beach getaways, outdoor hikes and walks, itineraries centred on culture and food, and a few surprises for travellers wishing to venture further afield.
Croatia was named the top summer destination this year, praised for its warm weather and lively party atmosphere. Utah It came second, appealing to travellers seeking breathtaking landscapes and adventure-filled experiences.
The list also includes Switzerland, Uzbekistan, Colorado, Japan, Italy, New Hampshire, Spain, California, Curaçao, Iceland, Portugal, Ireland, Bermuda, Tanzania, Scotland, Peru, Morocco, and Czechia.
