Since Wednesday 7 August, the fire has been raging in the Municipality of Amari, and nine villages have been evacuated. More specifically, the fires have destroyed vast areas in the municipal communities of Agia Paraskevi, Agios Ioannis, Ano Merus and Apodoulos, causing extensive damage to public infrastructure, such as utility networks and water supply points, as well as to agricultural land, with olive groves, vineyards and grassland burnt to the ground.
As announced by the Minister for Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, substantial firefighting resources and volunteers have rushed to the scene of the fires to bring them under control immediately.
The Mayor of Amari, Mr Pantelis Mourtzanos, has submitted a request to the General Secretariat for Civil Protection and the Regional Governor of Crete, Mr Arnaoutakis, to have the area declared immediately fire-affected. In light of this unfortunate development, we advise visitors to avoid the following routes on epaithros.
