Crete has consistently recorded high performance in the overall tourist experience, confirming its position as one of the main pillars of Greek tourism, according to data from the new INSETE “Greece Reputation Tracker” report for the period October 2025 – March 2026. Despite the overall positive picture, the analysis also highlights specific areas for improvement, the most important of which is hygiene, which appears to have the greatest impact on visitors’ perception of the destination.
The report, which is based on the processing of thousands of online reviews and comments from visitors from international travel and experience platforms, records an overall score of 9.1 out of 10 for Crete in the overall visitor experience. This performance is slightly below the national average for Greece (9.2), but remains significantly higher than the European average, which stood at 8.9.
In order to draw conclusions, 20,538 reviews were analyzed regarding the experience of visitors to restaurants, attractions and recreational areas in Crete, which gives particular weight to the findings of the study.
The data show that culture remains the strongest competitive advantage of Crete, scoring 9.3 and confirming that the island’s cultural identity continues to function as a key differentiating factor. This is followed by experiences related to the sea with 9.2 and gastronomy with 9.1, reflecting the dynamics of the island’s complex tourism product that combines natural environment, culture and local flavors.
At the same time, the report records a high assessment of the quality of service and human resources, an element that appears overall as one of the strongest characteristics of Greek tourism and has a decisive impact on the overall visitor experience. At a national level, the assessment of human resources reached 9.5, constituting the highest performance among all individual indicators.
The picture by origin market is also interesting. Visitors from the United Kingdom appear to be particularly satisfied with their experience in Crete, giving it a score of 9.2, followed by visitors from the United States with 9.1. Visitors from France rated their experience with 8.9 and those from Germany with 8.8. Of particular importance is the fact that Greek visitors rated Crete with 9.3, a performance higher than many international markets, while the lowest rating among the main markets came from Italy with 8.1.
At the same time, the report identifies the issue of hygiene as a key area of concern. The relevant score for Crete was 7.9, a level lower than the threshold of 8 used in the evaluation of the experience and lower than other key indicators of the destination. This observation, according to the analysis, is linked to the increasing sensitivity of travelers to issues of cleanliness and the quality of public and private infrastructure.
At the national level, Greece maintained an overall score of 9.2 and outperformed key competing Mediterranean destinations, such as Croatia (9.1), Portugal (8.9), Italy (8.9) and Spain (8.8), confirming that the quality of the experience continues to be a key comparative advantage of Greek tourism internationally.
