The Region of Crete has submitted a dossier to the Council of Europe for the creation of a cultural route focusing on olive cultivation.
The Region of Crete, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, is in the process of submitting a dossier to the Council of Europe for the creation of the “Cultural Route of Olive Culture”, based in Crete. This is a strategic initiative that aims to highlight the island’s cultural heritage and to promote the olive tree as a symbol of culture, tradition and sustainable development.
The initiative was announced by the Governor of Crete, Mr Stavros Arnaoutakis, who noted that it is the result of close cooperation with the Ministry of Culture. As he stated, the initiative is expected to take on an international dimension, with the participation of many countries.
The main objective of the project is to comprehensively promote the culture surrounding the olive tree, by highlighting the unique qualities of its products, the intangible cultural heritage and traditions associated with it, and the historical monuments that bear witness to its enduring significance, as well as by developing a network of targeted initiatives to link culture, agricultural production and tourism.
The regional governor of Crete expressed his optimism regarding the success of the bid, stating: “This development represents a tremendous opportunity for the whole of Crete and for the whole of Greece. We are confident that we will succeed in showcasing all these distinctive features, the culture of the olive tree and our monuments”.
The emergence of Crete as the headquarters of the “Cultural Route for the Culture of the Olive Tree” is expected to significantly raise the profile of the island and the country abroad, placing it at the heart of a European network of culture and sustainable development.
