From 22 to 24 October, the Conference: “Mountains of Greece: Heritage Narratives from the Past for a Sustainable Future” is currently being implemented: an important initiative dedicated to the natural and cultural heritage of the Greek mountains.
This special conference at the British School at Athens aims to shed new light on the heritage of Greece’s mountain regions. It explores how that heritage can best be protected for the future, against the backdrop of the current rapid expansion of mountain tourism and development in Greece. How can we harness the vast untapped potential for greater engagement with history, heritage and conservation in Greece’s mountain landscapes? How can we ensure a sustainable approach to environmental and cultural preservation?
The conference brings together academics, writers, botanists, conservationists, policy-makers, mountain tourism professionals and representatives of local communities to share their unique perspectives. It also aims to adopt a comparative approach, linking the challenges faced by Greek mountain communities and organisations with similar challenges in other mountain regions around the world.
