Rural Tourism Cluster

Business intelligence and decision making platform

As part of the JoinOuT project, Aegean Solutions carried out a survey to collect data on agrotourism. In addition, data and information were gathered on points of interest, covering areas such as culture, the environment, the economy, etc.

The process used for data identification and analysis was as follows:

1. Web data scraping ->

2. Data engineering ->

3. Hosting on a data lake ->

4. Visualisation using Power Bl.

The data was extracted from various data sources and processed so that it could be loaded into the Power BI tool.

Furthermore, Aegean Solutions S.A. set about developing an Agrotourism Business Intelligence System (AgroTour_BIS), through which various types of data relating to tourism, infrastructure, culture and other aspects of the Cretan countryside were collected and analysed. The design of this system was based on the platform of the Rural Tourism Network “epaithros”.”

Linked businesses can use the platform as a decision-support tool to identify the characteristics of the area in which they operate, potential distribution channels, and to plan their activities. For example, if they have information on hotel bookings, the countries of origin and the age of tourists visiting Crete, they can design appropriate promotional campaigns and educational programmes for them.

The platform features:

  • A Knowledge Base for the semantic representation and integration of heterogeneous data and information from multiple and diverse sources (linked data) relating to agrotourism, infrastructure and culture in Crete.
  • A visualisation tool for these data, broken down by region and by type of activity or business.
  • An analysis tool for consolidated and correlated data and information relating to Crete as a whole and across all areas of interest (agritourism, infrastructure, culture).
  • A visual analytics tool for the unified and correlated data, information and knowledge generated (through inference) to support decision-making.

The project entitled “Joint Innovative Activities for Outdoor Tourism” and distinctive title: “JolnOuT”, is implemented within the framework of the Action “Cooperative Innovation Formations/SCC” - 2nd Call: Businesses” and is financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and by National Resources in the context of the Operational Program “Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation (EPANEK)” of the NSRF 2014-2020″ (Project code: ΓΓ2CL-0359457).
