In the heart of Crete, where the slopes of Psiloritis meet the historic villages of Amari, the Amari Green Festival celebrates its 10th edition this year, from 18 to 21 July 2025. Four days packed with activities, concerts, hands-on workshops, tours, films, games, flavours and stories, in a festival that spreads from village to village and transforms the entire Amari valley into a vast, open-air cultural and environmental laboratory. The festival began ten years ago with the aim of showcasing the region’s natural and cultural heritage and fostering networks of cooperation between organisations, associations, artists and local residents. Today, the Amari Green Festival is a well-established fixture on Crete’s cultural calendar, and this year it is expanding even further: more than 40 events are being organised across the Municipality of Amari, with the participation of local organisations and visitors from all over Greece, as well as from abroad.
This year, the Amari Green Festival takes us back in time, evoking images, sounds and stories from the traditional festivals of Crete, under the theme “Beautiful villages with beautiful festivals”. Through a varied programme taking place across the villages of Amari, the festival honours the roots of local celebrations: the spontaneous evenings in cafés and squares, the communal meals, the sounds of the lyre and the generations who danced hand in hand. Featuring photography exhibitions, hands-on workshops, culinary revivals, storytelling sessions, round-table discussions and concerts, this year’s festival becomes a celebration of memory and culture, highlighting the festival not only as entertainment but as a profound social and cultural experience that unites communities and passes on the wisdom and joy of our ancestors to future generations.
